MONIKKO

MONIKKO was a research- and development project on workplace equality and diversity carried out in 2005–2007. The project focused on gender equality while a wider perspective including e.g. age, ethnicity and disability was adopted.

MONIKKO produced innovations and good practices promoting gender equality at work, reduced gender segregation of work tasks, developed interaction between people of different ages at workplaces, and erased discriminatory practices related to ethnicity. Many of these practices are hidden and unspoken in the workplace culture. In the project, gender equality and diversity were seen as positive resources for workplaces. The aim was to generate new information on diversity at work and benefit work organisations both in terms of productivity and the well-being of people.

MONIKKO included five sub-projects yielding new data and new practices. The sub-projects were mostly focused on small and medium-sized enterprises. Research activities as well as practical development work in close collaboration with participating work organisations were carried out.

Also a "Diversity Barometer" survey was carried out. The "Diversity Barometer" examined attitudes towards diversity in enterprises. The b arometer revealed that age and ethnic origin were considered the most important aspects of diversity. According to the barometer, the importance of ethnic origin seems to grow in Finland in the future.
